Big Book Station

The big book station seems to always be a favorite station with my students, yet it is the one that I feel I need to work on the most. How do all of you use your big books or big book station?

I typically read a big book each week for shared reading. For example, this week our big book was Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? We read it several times as a whole class throughout the week. When the week is over, I place this book into a large bin simply called "The Big Book Bin."  Once we have a few books in there, we can start using the station.

I made a new "I can..." sheet for this station and plan on introducing it next week. I let them use small pipe cleaners to circle sight words (they love this and are actually very responsible with them) and use special pointers to point to the words as they read along. I found some great heart shaped post it notes, and I am going to let them put one on their favorite page each week.

I would love to hear some of your ideas and how you use big books in your classroom. Here is my "I Can" sheet for the big book station.

Trick or Treat

We are in full Halloween mode at my house. My daughter already has her costume hanging proudly in her closet and she and her neighborhood friends are discussing the best route to take to trick or treat. My son does not have a costume but he is sure he will get a bag filled with Reese's peanut butter cups. I actually love Halloween! I love to hear my students talk about the costumes and how excited they are to dress up for a fun night of treats (hopefully no tricks). Here are a few early Halloween treats for you:

Heart Words

A couple of years ago, a kindergarten colleague was describing her sight words and she called them "heart words". I loved it! The children do need to know them "by heart".She told me about a fantastic website. You can print out most of the dolch words from this site and they are printed onto hearts. The website is for Mrs. Shehan's kindergarten. If you have never visited this site, go right now! It is great!

In the beginning of the year, we focus on one or two words a week. We read the word, write it, put it on the word wall, and usually read an emergent reader that focuses on the specific word. For example, today we learned the word "the."

After I introduce the word, I have a child put it on the word wall. Then, I pass out a sheet for the children to write the word. This sheet will go home in the weekly reading folder for parents to review.

I also send home the emergent reader in the folder so the children can read it to their parents. Enjoy!

Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear, Turn Around!

Next week is Teddy Bear Week in my classroom. The students always love this week. We end the theme with a teddy bear picnic of course! The children make bear hats and weather permitting, we eat our snack outside by our playground. I made a few new activities to go along with this unit. Take a look:

Thank you, thank you!

I feel like Sally Field when she accepted her Oscar: "You like me, you really like me!" Well, thank you so much to Miss J at:

I just won her versatile blog award!

Here are the rules:

The Rules after accepting the Versatile Blogger Award are:

  • Thank the person who gave you the award and link back to them in your post.
  • Share 7 things about yourself
  • Pass this award along to 15 recently discovered blogs.
To go along with the award, I will share seven things about myself:

1. I live in Upstate New York and really love raising my children here. Apple picking in the fall, sleigh riding in the winter, and pools in the summer (I did not mention spring because it is just a slushy muddy mess here).
2. I also really love reality tv. Yup, guilty as charged. Although I only watch certain kinds - any real housewives show is most likely on my dvr list.
3. My favorite food - hands down - mashed potatoes and gravy
4. I love coffee - with fat free hazelnut cream, yum!
5. I did the couch to 5K program and now run 2 miles every morning (5:45 AM - hello!)
6. I also lost 30 pounds (Why? see #3 How? see #5)
7. I love my job (sticky five year old fingers and all)!

Here are 15 blogs I recently discovered that I love:

Morning Meeting

Hello! I am sure all of you have a routine for your morning meeting. We sing a monthly song, complete the calendar, discuss the leader and helper for the day, talk about the weather, complete a daily message and we also recite our daily classroom pledge. I am not sure of the author, but I found this pledge on the CanTeach songs and poems website. It is a fantastic site!!! Click here for a copy of our daily poem. I have it written on large chart paper. Pin It Now!

The ABC's of Our School

I love this book for the first week of school. I have had it forever!! It is an alphabet book for a primary classroom. After we read the book, we make our own ABC book for our school. As a class we brainstorm different places in the school such as the cafeteria, playground, etc. They will need some help with tricky letters like x and z. Then, I type up the places for each letter. The next day, each student gets a sentence. They glue the sentence on the bottom of a large sheet of construction paper and then illustrate the page. Since I have 23 students this year, a few children will have to do two letters (I always have volunteers). I am attaching a list of ideas we have done in the past to give you an idea of the places we have in our homemade big book.

Extreme Makeover - Teacher's Dining Room Edition

OK, seriously, thank goodness school starts this week. Yes, I have a home office but somehow every August my poor dining room becomes a makeshift teacher factory. Laminating film is flying everywhere, the cat is playing with random crayons that fell to the floor, and my poor husband doesn't even do a double take anymore when he walks past the room. Thankfully, everything has been cleaned up and packed away in my car. Please note the iced coffee in the middle. How would I ever survive???? Pin It Now!

My Home Away From Home

 Welcome to my classroom!
This is my very empty word wall. It will soon be filled with lots of heart words! I am also very excited about my new Smart Table (right in front of the word wall - yippee!!!!)

This is my alphabet board to go along with "No More Letter of the Week."
This is what you see when you walk in the door.
